These two men, one dark-skinned, the other light, have been friends for many years, and they are a quiet drama of sameness and difference. Both are sitting, looking right at us. The man on the left is upright, assertive, at the same time he recedes behind dark glasses. The other is hunched over, his expression sad, but he gets energy from the way the horizontal stripes of his shirt are continued by the slats of the bench. Both have their hands clasped, but not just the same way. And their clothing, including those dapper hats, are a medley of sameness and difference. They seemed so comfortable, and yet it was surprising to see them sitting so close together, at the very end of the bench, when they had all that room to their left.

They welcomed me photographing them, and made me more thoughtful about the meaning two people can have for each other.
