This grey seal is a mingling of depth and surface, the hidden and shown, with its face partially seen above the water, and its body amorphous and dark below. Shakespeare wrote in The Tempest of Caliban: "This thing of darkness I acknowledge mine." There are things deep inside us we feel should never see the light of day, and we should want to know them, not hide from them. And sometimes, the things we hide may be the best part of us.
